1. Mohair Beginnings

All of our mohair comes from Angora Goats.

As you can see in the picture above, Angora Goats have naturally curly hair (the straightest hair is on the chins).  Mohair can be perm'd and styled just like any natural hair, but will also eventually revert back to it's natural curliness, whatever it is, just like your own hair will eventually revert back after a perm.  That is why it is important to buy mohair with the natural curliness (or straightness) that you desire to begin with, rather than try to alter the curliness afterwards.

2. "Standard Straight" (i.e., Roving Mohair)

The bulk of the world's mohair production is targeted to textile mills.  These textile mills require the mohair to be in a particular form-- called mohair "tops" or "roving mohair". 

Roving mohair is typically machine-cleaned, then machine combed and spun into large balls of mohair that resemble big balls of twine.  The combing separates each individual fiber, which is then re-combined during the spinning to be one long continuous rope of mohair (typically about 2/3 inch to maybe 3/4 inch in diameter).  Since the roving mohair fibers are separated then recombined, the resulting "rope" of mohair looks continuous and relatively straight, but in reality is composed of many individual strands of various lengths and curliness.  One ounce of this mohair is about a one yard length of this "rope", and typically looks like this:

Since Roving Mohair (our "Standard Straight") is machine processed, it is also the lowest cost (as well as lowest quality) mohair we sell.  While it may look long, the individual strands are of random lengths, and have been recombined (by machine) to make a continuous-looking rope of mohair.

3. Premium Mohair

In contrast to our "Standard Straight" mohair, our Premium mohairs are hand-selected, hand-sorted, hand-cleaned, hand-dyed, and hand-packaged.  Hand-selecting and sorting insures consistent length, and cleaning by hand insures that not too much of the natural oils are washed away.

We have two different brands of Premium Mohair: (1) Bountiful Baby Premium Mohair, and (2) Pearl Moon Premium Mohair.  Pearl Moon mohair is from a ranch in New Hampshire (we buy 100% of the production of this ranch), and the Bountiful Baby brand is our own.  Both of our Premium Mohair brands are equivalent in quality.  Here is an example of our Premium mohair:

4. Premium Plus Mohair

We hand-select our very best Bountiful Baby Premium mohair, and label it Premium Plus.  This is our highest quality mohair-- unsurpassed in silkiness, sheen, and consistency. Premium Plus is also the rarest of all our mohair.  Premium Plus is only available in the Bountiful Baby brand.
